Turmoil the Universities Can’t Ignore

With the existence of the Coronavirus Pandemic and recent police interaction with people of color, it has become quite evident that the well-being of our democratic nation is at risk, our systems are fractured and if we previously didn’t know, we know now that our community is very vulnerable.

None of us can ignore the turmoil, the frustration, or the racial divisions in our country — a cascade of grief for Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd has brought heartbreak to the forefront. The racism and injustice we continue to witness bring grievous hurt to our communities. The racial tension comes to us at a moment when so many in our nation are vulnerable and weary from the Coronavirus Pandemic.

We are facing again the legacy of our country’s founding.  The founding that did not recognize the full humanity of all people.

Additionally, COVID-19 poses an unprecedented threat to public health; social health and financial health for everyone, but particularly for people of color.

So what is the role of the university?

A critical role of a university at moments of crisis is to be rededicated to the propositions that sustain a pluralistic democracy. Recognize that we are still far from realizing many ideals such as fairness, respect for the human dignity of others, evidence-based argument, scientific discovery, the pursuit of opportunity,  safety and equal justice for all.

Universities should be among the first entities to identify community problems and challenges. Virtually every university should include key community goals and objectives in their strategic plan. University leaders should be community leaders. This should be clear and self-evident. Until this happens, universities will not fully address the needs of White Americans or Black Americans.
